Bring Your Own Device Begins November 3rd

The use of mobile devices during school hours has always been a cause of apprehension for teachers in the past. We cannot however dismiss the widespread adoption of technology in higher education and ultimately, the workforce. Therefore, the educators at Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center are embracing technology as part of the curriculum at the earliest stages of a child’s education. The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program marries technology with the classroom, providing more effective, meaningful and engaging learning experiences for students that align with the expectations of a modern education.

As a teacher and advocate of classroom technology, I will be making an effort to increase the use of technology amongst my students. Mathematics is an area where students should be given immediate feedback on their execution of the problems that are taught that day. To help make sure this goal is achieved, I will be utilizing the programs called Poll Everywhere, Quizlet, and Socratic. In short, these programs give students sets of problems to solve with immediate feedback, short videos with explanations of how to solve problems, informal quizzes to test their mastery, and polling capabilities that can be used as a tool for whole class instruction. Not only are these tools engaging for students, but allow me as the teacher to see the classes strengths and weaknesses in order to guide instruction for the following day.

I encourage you to explore these tools further to understand their value in the classroom. Remember to register your device before November 3rd!

BYOD means big changes to school libraries.

Modern libraries include digital resources which allow students to explore information beyond books and print materials. This year, as part of the BYOD initiative, we have made these resources available to your students and the high school library is focused on assisting students as they gain the information literacy skills they need to be successful at Trail and beyond.

Students moving on to college or trade school must be able to access the information they need and be able to determine whether that information is worthwhile. By adding BYOD to our district, we will help our students use these new digital resources, such as: I encourage you to explore these incredible resources with your students.

With apps and online programs, students now create information and knowledge to share with their peers and their teachers. Our new BYOD policies are making these changes possible.

It is an exciting time to be a librarian at Lackawanna Trail!
